<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus which has excellent maintenance efficiency and in which waste paper is kept little. <P>SOLUTION: The image recording apparatus includes: a conveying means that accelerates a long-length recording medium to a predetermined speed from a stopped state, conveys the long-length recording medium and decelerates the long-length recording medium to stop; a recording means that records an image on the recording medium, and forms a test pattern on the recording medium after image recording upon decelerating the recording medium; a reading means that reads the image and the test pattern recorded by the recording means; an image converting part that converts input image data into image data to be output by the recording means; a maintenance means that performs maintenance of the recording means; and a controller that, on the basis of first data obtained by reading the test pattern by the image reading part, decides whether or not the maintenance is needed and content thereof.
