PURPOSE: An accessory recognizing method of a portable terminal and an apparatus thereof are provided to automatically recognize an accessory which is installed in an interface unit. CONSTITUTION: A power supply unit(161) supplies microphone bias power for discriminating an accessory in an interface unit. A current detector(162) measures the output current amount of the power supply unit. A controller(110) confirms whether the output current amount of the power supply unit exceeds the set reference current amount. The controller recognizes the kind of accessory according to the output current amount of the power supply unit.
