PURPOSE:To provide a surface protective agent which curtails a time required for the formation of a coating film and imparts high hardness to the surfaces of synthetic resin articles, consisting of anisobutylene/maleic anhydride/styrene terpolymer. CONSTITUTION:A surface protective agent is composed of an isobutylene/maleic anhydride/styrene terpolymer. The terpolymer can be obtd. by copolymerizing isobutylene, maleic anhydride and styrene, and the blending ratio thereof is determined by taking the physical properties of the copolymer into consideration. Usually, maleic anhydride is used in a quantity of 0.5-1.5mol per mol of isobutylene. When the terpolymer is applied to the surfaces of synthetic resin products, paper and wood, it is used as a soln. of the terpolymer in a solvent.
