330,221. Tyrer, D., Watts, H., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. Dec. 31, 1928. Water gas is generated by passing a mixture of finely divided carbonaceous material (liquid or solid) with a gas containing oxygen and steam, or steam alone, at a rate of about 10 c.m. per second or less in contact with a highly heated surface. Finely divided coal or coke and steam are blown by an injector through a preheating chamber heated to 600‹ C. and then passed into a larger chamber heated externally to 1500‹ C. in which the mixture is heated by radiation, a velocity of 10 c.m. per second being maintained. The generator may be divided into zones of different temperatures by internal baffles; and vertical generators of relatively large diameter are preferably used. Specifications 266,354, 288,797, and 295,717 are referred to.
