A method for packaging an article comprises the steps of wrapping the article with packaging material to form a package 200, forming a tear feature 230 in the package 200 and attaching a strip 132 to the packaging material such that the strip 132 covers the tear feature 230. The tear feature may be formed using laser beams 124 to score the packaging. The thickness of the packaging material may also be measured and used to control the depth of cut of the laser beams 124.
