<p>An arrangement for a compressor (20) having a suction valve (36) and discharge valve (56) is provided. The compressor (20) includes a cylinder (24) having a diametral axis (33). A valve plate (28) is positioned to cover the cylinder (24). The valve plate (28) includes a suction port (32) positioned on the diametral axis (33) and a discharge port (34). A suction valve (36) having a first end (44) is coupled to the valve plate (28) and a second end (46) is movable between a first position, in contact with suction port (32), and a second position.
