This invention is directed to indole acetic acid derivatives of Formula (1a) or (1b): (see formula 1a) (see formula 1b) wherein R1 is H, C1-C6 alkyl, or benzyl; R2 is H or C1-C6 alkyl; R3 is H or C1-C4 alkyl; R4 is H, C1-C4 alkyl, or C1-C4 acyl; Y is O or NR5; R5 is H or C1-C6 alkyl optionally substituted with C3-C6 cycloalkyl; n is 2, 3, or 4; Ar is a ring radical selected from phenyl and a 6-membered heteroaryl ring containing up to three N atoms, and their use in pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hyperlipidemia, and atherosclerotic disease. The invention is also directed to intermediates useful in preparation of indole acetic derivatives and to methods of preparation.
