PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for diagnosing the insulation state of a field winding are provided to predict the generation of ground faults and determine the repair range of field winding. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus(100) for diagnosing the insulation state of a field winding comprises a switching unit(110), a current measurement unit(120), a voltage measurement unit(130), and a diagnostic unit(140). The switching unit is connected to the field winding and includes a first switch and a second switch which alternatively operates the switching. The current measurement unit measures and outputs the current of the field winding while the first switch is turned on. The voltage measurement unit measures and outputs a voltage current generated according to the field winding while the second switch is turned on. The diagnostic unit produces an impedance or capacitance value of the field winding and analyzes whether the impedance or capacitance value calculated is located within a criteria range or not.
