The device (D) has a calculation unit (MC1) for estimating admissible current limit for a multi-cellular battery (BA) based on measured current, minimum current and/or maximum current, minimal voltage and/or maximal voltage and measured voltages. Each measured voltage is considered as a sum of instantaneous portion proportional to the measured current and slow portion possessing non significant variations between successive measurements. The unit has sub-units (SM11) for estimating charge limit current for the battery.
