<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine capable of ensuring an appropriate operation even when there is a malfunction in a suspension that has a damper using a magnetorheological fluid. <P>SOLUTION: In the washing machine according to an embodiment, the suspension has a damper comprising: a shaft that reciprocates within a tubular cylinder according to the vibration of a water tub; a coil that is held within the cylinder and generates a magnetic field by being energized; and a magnetorheological fluid that is placed within the cylinder and changes in viscosity due to the magnetic field generated by the coil. The viscosity of the magnetorheological fluid acts to resist the reciprocation of the shaft. Control means determines whether or not the current flowing through the coil is within the preset range of current value based on the detection result of current detection means. If the current value exceeds the upper limit of the range of current value, the control means at least stops the energization of the coil.
