PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ETHYLENE DICHLORIDE

An oxychlorination process for prepg. ethylene dichloride comprises (a) reacting CH2 =CH2 with HCl and O2 in the presence of a catalyst, (b) dividing the effluent into at least (i) an ethylene dichloride- rich fraction (I) and (ii) an ethyl chloride-rich fraction (II) so that (I) contains less than 50% of the total wt. ethyl chloride and the sum of the wt. of ethylene dichloride and vinyl chloride in (II) is less than 30% of the wt. of ethyl chloride in (II), and (c) cracking (II) opt. in the presence of an inert diluent. (II) contains less than 5% ethylene chloride and vinyl chloride based on the combined wt. of ethyl chloride and diluent in (II) prior to cracking.
