<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rescue passengers by efficiently and safely moving a car of a balance state up to the nearest story in the middle of a hoistway. <P>SOLUTION: This elevator of one embodiment includes a compensation rope, a compensation sheave and a compensation rope traction device. The compensation rope is suspended by connecting one end to the car and the other end to a counterweight. The compensation sheave is wound with the compensation rope, and freely moves in the vertical direction, and also imparts tension to the compensation rope by dead weight. The compensation rope traction device is detachably fixed to the compensation sheave, and has an auxiliary sheave and an operation handle. The auxiliary sheave is oppositely provided with a plurality of rope grooves to a rope groove of the compensation sheave of a fixing destination, and sandwiches the compensation rope between the compensation sheave and itself.
