<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an object more accurately. <P>SOLUTION: The object detection apparatus, by using a plurality of polar lines emitted from a pole and a plurality of circles whose center is the pole, divides into meshes indicating areas surrounded by adjoining polar lines and adjoining circles or areas surrounded by adjoining polar lines and a smallest circle in said circles, in a polar coordinate system whose pole is a specific point in a foreground image. The object detection apparatus calculates the gradient direction of a contour pixel in the foreground image relative to a reference direction of a mesh, and acquires a histogram in a gradient direction of the mesh on the basis of the calculated gradient direction, for each of the meshes. The object detection apparatus connects histograms in the gradient directions of all the meshes to create an overall histogram vector, and performs Fourier transform on the overall histogram vector to acquire a feature vector of the foreground image.
