This device is of the type including a frustoconical socket made from deformable material such as rubber in which are embedded thin metallic strips pointing concentrically, the socket including an axial bore provided to be engaged around the axisymmetric piece to be worked on and itself being engaged in a frustoconical housing of corresponding dimensions formed in the bed of the machine equipped with this device. In this device, the means which act on the socket 4 on its largest diameter side in order to move it axially consist of a pressing means 8 articulated on the machine and located, during use, substantially in the vicinity of the face 4a of the socket 4 defining its largest diameter, so as to act directly or otherwise on this face 4a in order to move the socket 4, a rod 9 being articulated via one of its ends to the pressing means 8 and via the other of its ends to an actuating lever 11 articulated about a pin 25 secured to the bed 2 of the machine 1. <IMAGE>
