A monitoring device (100, 200) for monitoring the impedance of a power component (125), comprising connection means (123, 124) for the power component (125), a first circuit (130) in parallel with said connection means (123, 124), a test signal generator (105) for injecting a test signal into the power component (125) via a transmission line (120), and a monitor (110) for monitoring a reflected voltage wave from the power component (125), a memory unit (113) for storing measured values of the reflected voltage wave and a control unit (112) for comparing stored measured values of the reflected voltage wave to each other and for outputting an alarm signal if stored measured values of the reflected voltage wave deviate from a reference value. The ratio between the characteristic impedance of the transmission line (120) and the first circuits absolute value of its complex impedance (130) is greater than 0.2.
