<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To configure a gradiometer in which an optical pumping magnetometer is used, read-out probe light sequentially passes through two magnetic field measuring areas and a signal corresponding to a magnetic flux density in each area is obtained, and to specify such a geometrical arrangement as to obtain a great signal from a bipolar moment as a signal source in the gradiometer using the optical pumping magnetometer having high-sensitivity, in particular. <P>SOLUTION: A magnetic moment of a signal source, a first magnetic field measuring area and a second magnetic field measuring area are disposed in this order, and this axis is defined as a (z) axis. In the magnetic field measuring area, a (z) component of a magnetic field is measured. Pump light is radiated in a y-axis direction. Probe light is transmitted through the first magnetic field measuring area in a positive direction of an (x) axis, turned in an optical path, and then transmitted through the second magnetic field measuring area in a negative direction of the (x) axis, thereby detecting a rotation angle of a polarization plane in an optical system.
