<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder capable of accurately detecting speed even during low-speed rotation, the encoder being configured to detect rotation information on a motor. <P>SOLUTION: An encoder includes a data memory for storing position detection data in the case where the position detection data detected by a position detector is changed. The position detection data stored in the data memory is compared with latest position detection data detected by the position detector. In the case where the position detection data is changed, an amount of change of the position detection data and a time until the change are counted by a counter.
