<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a sugar alcohol, capable of efficiently synthesizing a sugar alcohol from a saccharide under a mild condition. <P>SOLUTION: The method of producing a sugar alcohol is characterized by (1) hydrolyzing a saccharide and subsequently reducing the resulting hydrolyzate using a monovalent or divalent secondary alcohol as a hydrogen source or by (2) reducing a monosaccharide and/or an oligosaccharide using a monovalent or divalent secondary alcohol as a hydrogen source, in the presence of water and a solid catalyst comprising ruthenium (Ru) supported by a carbon support. In particular, 2-propanol and 2-butanol are preferred as the alcohol.
