<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound useful for efficiently imparting excellent properties such as excellent thermostability, excellent crosslinkability, a high refractive index, excellent transparency and a low linear expansion coefficient. <P>SOLUTION: A compound having a fluorene skeleton represented by formula (1) is provided by reacting a fluorenone with a condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon having a hydroxy group in the presence of an acidic catalyst. (wherein, ring Z<SP POS="POST">1</SP>and ring Z<SP POS="POST">2</SP>are each a condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon ring; R<SP POS="POST">1a</SP>, R<SP POS="POST">1b</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">2</SP>represent the same or different substituent; k1 and k2 are the same or different and each represent an integer of 0-4; m represents an integer of ≥0; and n represents an integer of ≥1).
