A method and apparatus for allocating a unique identifier to a network entity of an IP network, the method comprising, the apparatus comprising means for: providing a plurality of IP address pools, wherein each IP address pool comprises a common IP address to be shared between a plurality of network entities, and wherein each IP address pool has a corresponding IP address sharing ratio defining the number of network entities sharing the respective common IP address; for each IP address pool, dividing a port bit set comprising N port bits into M port bits and N-M port bits wherein M<N and wherein the pattern of selected M port bits in the port bit set identifies the corresponding IP address pool and the value of the M port bits is unique to each network entity sharing the common IP address; and adding the M port bits to the common IP address to provide a unique identifier. |
