A method and system for obtaining network element information are disclosed in the present invention, wherein the existing of a household base station gateway and/or the permission of an Internet Protocol (IP) shunt connection are determined during the IP shunt connection processing, and the household base station gateway or a network element management system sends local gateway information to a mobility management entity. The method and system in the present invention are no longer the same as the existing technology, in which a wireless side network element sends the local gateway information to the network side even if the mobility management entity determines that the IP shunt connection does not need to be established, but it is guaranteed as much as possible that the local network gateway information is sent only when it is required, thus information redundancy can be avoided as much as possible, message length may not be increased, and processing load of the system can be decreased effectively.
