<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source unit capable of achieving improvement in luminance by freely emitting monochromatic light and synthetic light, and a projector having the light source unit. <P>SOLUTION: A projector of the present invention includes a light source unit 60, a display element, and projector control means and the like. The light source unit 60 includes an excitation light irradiation device 70, a fluorescent wheel 101 having a fluorescent light-emitting region on a base material and adapted to emit green fluorescent light by irradiation of excitation light from the excitation light irradiation device 70 to the fluorescent light-emitting region, a red light source device 120 and a blue light source device 300, a light source-side optical system 140 for collecting the fluorescent light emitted from the fluorescent wheel 101 and light emitted from the red and blue light source devices 120, 300 on a predetermined plane, and light source control means for individually controlling emission from the excitation light irradiation device 70 and the two kinds of light source devices 120, 300.
