A linear motor includes a field including main-magnetic-pole permanent magnets (202) magnetized in a direction of a generation magnetic field, and sub-magnetic-pole permanent magnets (203) magnetized in a direction different from the direction of magnetic poles of the main-magnetic-pole permanent magnets (202), portions of the main-magnetic-pole permanent magnets (202) located at a magnetic-field generation side being replaced with soft magnetic materials (204); and an armature including an armature core (101) having teeth (102) and armature coils (104) wound around the armature cores (101). The linear motor satisfies » < Ä, where » is a pitch of the magnetic poles of the field, and Ä is a pitch of the teeth (102).
