The device adjusts a print head (9) on a carriage (8) parallel to the platen (13) between, and at right angles to end positions, against the resistance of a spring. A rotatable roller (15) on the face of the head (9) bears upon a flexible tape (16) running parallel to the platen (13) and resting on the thickness of paper (10) during the process of printing. For undisturbed treatment of several millimetres' thickness of paper, the tape (16) is movable lengthwise under spring pressure. The tape has cutouts in one edge, into which the roller (15) descends so that its periphery is no longer in contact with the tape.
