An AC generator for a car has a three-phase, star-connected stator winding coupled to three diodes pairs in a conventional rectifier bridge, giving 12 V positive output at the B+ terminal, and a rectified voltage at the D+ terminal for the rotor winding and regulator circuit. The voltage between the start point and earth (roughly half line voltage) is tapped off and used for to drive some vehicle auxiliaries at reduced load (e.g. a cooling fan). Alternatively, the main 12 V battery can be replaced by two 6 V ones in series, both being charged from the B+ terminal for major loads and one being charged from the new terminal for minor loads. ADVANTAGE- Excellent means of increasing overall engine efficiency by using a previously-ignored generator voltage for some tasks.
