Testing of a process control system 200 includes obtaining user inputs to a first process control system (100, fig 1), obtaining process inputs and first process outputs of the first process control system (100, fig 1), providing the user inputs and the process inputs to the process control system under test 200 to operate the second process control system 200, obtaining second process outputs of the second process control system 200, and comparing the first and second process outputs to determine whether the second process control system 200 is implemented as intended. Another invention relates to testing a third process control system (fig 6), based on the second process control system 200.
