PURPOSE: A(microphthalmia transcription factor) inhibitor and a cosmetic composition containing the same for skin whitening is provided to suppress melanogenesis without cytotoxicity. CONSTITUTION: A cosmetic composition for skin whitening contains 0.005-50 wt% of 4-{4-[(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)methyl]-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxolane-2-yl}benzene-1,2-diol of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient. A pharmaceutical composition for skin whitening contains the compound of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient. The cosmetic composition is manufactured in the form of a solution, gel, solid or kneaded anhydrous product, suspension, or spray.
