A method of mechanically refining lignocellulose material in a refiner having opposed mutually rotating refiner plates includes providing at least one of the plates 10 with bars 20 having a radially outer section 14 with a holdback angle of at least 30 degrees and each including a leading sidewall having an irregular surface 28 along a length of the bars in the outer sections such that the width of the bar varies along the length having the irregular surface. As the fibrous material moves through the gap between the plates, passing over the bars and through the grooves 21 between the bars, the movement of the material through a groove is inhibited by the interaction of the material and the irregular surface on the leading sidewall of the bar adjacent the groove. The material, fed into the gap between the refiner plates adjacent the centre of the plates is discharged from the gap at the periphery of the refiner plates.
