Disclosed is an awning (10) which can be fitted to a support and can be extended and retracted. The awning includes a frame (11) defining the length and width of the awning and including two elongated parallel opposed sides (14, 15). A length of flexible material (16) is arranged to be extended along the length of the frame to provide a screen, and can be retracted towards one end of the frame for storage. A windup roller (18) is mounted at or adjacent one end (12) of the frame with one end of the flexible material secured to the windup roller. The windup roller is driveable to wind the flexible material around the windup roller, and the other end of the flexible material is attached to an end rail (20) of the frame. The awning has one or more intermediate rails (22) each consisting of a split rail, one portion of which lies above the flexible material, and the other portion of which lies below the flexible material, neither portion of the split rail being secured toxh o the flexible material. Each end of the end rail and of the intermediate rails is engaged with the frame so as to restrict movement of the rails in directions perpendicular to the plane of the frame but so as to permit movement of the rails along the length of the frame. The end rail and the intermediate rails are interconnected by connection means such that movement of said end rail towards the extended position of the awning moves the intermediate rails relative to the frame.
