Processes and intermediates for the prepration of aliskiren

Disclosed are intermediates and processes for the preparation of pharmaceutical compounds such as aliskiren (as encompassed by formula (XII)), wherein compounds of formula (XII) can be prepared from the compounds of formula (IX), (VIII) or (II) by processes which comprise the step of reacting the compound of the formula (IX), with an amine of the formula (XIII) wherein the amido nitrogen can also be protected if desired and the protecting group then be removed in the corresponding protected compound of the formula XII, or a salt thereof; and wherein the substituents are as defined herein. Further disclosed are methods for preparing the compounds of formula (II), (VIII) and (IX).
