Barbituric and thiobarbituric amino acid derivatives as prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors

Disclosed are heteroaromatic N-substitued glycine derivative compounds of formula (I), wherein the substituents are as defined within the specification. Examples of compounds of formula (I) include: N-{ [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-6-hydroxy-4-oxo-3-(phenylmethyl)-2-thioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-5-pyrimidinyl]carbonyl} glycine; and N-[(1,3-dicyclohexyl-6-hydroxy-2,4-dioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-5-pyrimidinyl)carbonyl]glycine. Further disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula (I), and the use of a compound of formula (I) in the manufacture of a medicament for treating anemia, ischemia, and myocardial infarction. Also disclosed is a process for preparing a compound of formula (I).
