A refiner plate for mechanical refining of lignocellulose material has a refining surface with a plurality of bars 142, 146, 148 upstanding from a substrate of the surface and extending outwardly towards an outer periphery of the plate. A portion at least of the bars is provided with an irregular leading or trailing sidewall surface including protrusions extending outwardly from the leading or trailing sidewall towards an opposite sidewall of an adjacent bar. The bars are provided in an inner annular zone 132 of straight bars having a holdback angle of less than 15 degrees, an outer annular zone 136 of straight bars having a holdback angle of at least 45 degrees, and a middle annular zone 134 of straight bars between the inner and outer zones, the middle bars having a holdback angle of between 15 degrees and 45 degrees.
