Motor vehicle starter motor with improved water drainage

The starter motor has a drainage passage (24) in the bottom of the casing. The drainage passage has an elbow (28) so the part of the passage connected to the inside of the motor casing emerges at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the vertical, while the part of the passage emerging to the outside of the casing is vertical. The outlet is screened by a plate (38) placed immediately beneath the outlet and extending well beyond the outlet. The plate forms a chamber (34) beneath the outlet. The inner side wall of the chamber is curved (39), so that if the chamber is exposed to a jet of water, the water is deflected round the curved wall, directing it away from the drainage outlet. The plate extends tangentially from the bottom of the starter motor casing.
