The element involves a cathodic substrate (3) which emits electrons which excite the layers of phosphors (16) on the anodes (15) formed on the anodic substrate (2). The hydrophobe prevents damage to the glass by preventing breakdown of water by the electron beam. The exposed glass surface of the anode substrate is covered with a dark insulating layer (17) of hydrophobic material. It may be limited to those parts near the anodes which are irradiated by electrons or it may cover all parts other than that covered by phosphors (16). The hydrophobe may be taken from the nitride, carbide or fluoride group and be contained in a mixture of at least one of them.
