<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retrieve a character string at high speed. <P>SOLUTION: A retrieval part 1a adds, for a retrieval character string "th", a head symbol "$" to a head letter "t" and a suffix symbol "^" to a last suffix letter "h", and retrieves from a prearranged index file 3 a compression code that conforms respectively to a combination of a character string and the head symbol and a combination of the character string and the suffix symbol.
