<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a precursor of an active material having high capacity and excellent durability for operating cycles at high potential. <P>SOLUTION: An active material obtained by firing the precursor in the air has a layer structure and is represented by a formula (1) below. In firing the precursor in the air, the temperature at which the precursor becomes a compound with a layer structure, is 450°C or lower.
