An illumination device in which a light-guide plate is prevented from being scraped as a result of contact between the light-guide plate and a fixing member disposed at the rear surface of an end section of the light-guide plate. The illumination device is provided with: a chassis (14) comprising a base plate (14a) which accommodates a light-guide plate (11); and a light-source support member (15) which is fixedly screwed to the base plate (14a) of the chassis (14) by means of a fixing screw (16) constituting the fixing member, and which supports a light source (21) in such a way that the light source (21) is arranged proximate to a light-input surface (11a) of the light-guide plate (11) accommodated in the chassis (14). When a screw head (16a) of the fixing screw (16) that has fixed the light-source support member (15) to the base plate (14a) of the chassis (14) is disposed at the rear-surface side of an end section (11d) of the light-guide plate (11) accommodated in the chassis (14), a recess (12) for ensuring that the screw head (16a) does not come into contact with the light-guide plate (11) is formed at the location in the rear surface of the end section (11d) of the light-guide plate (11) where the screw head (16a) is disposed.
