<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating composition capable of forming a coating film that is applicable to various industrial products, especially outer panels of automobiles and has high chroma as a whole, and large hue change from a highlight (near specularly reflected light) to a shade (in the oblique direction) but small brightness change from a face (the middle of highlight and face) to a shade, and a method for forming a coating film. <P>SOLUTION: The coating composition includes a colored metallic pigment and a titanium oxide pigment, wherein the colored metallic pigment is obtained by forming an amorphous silicon oxide layer and a metal layer on a scale-like metal substrate and further coating metal particles on the surface thereof.
