The present invention provides a process for producing a carboxyl-containing polymer composition which exhibits excellent dispersibility in water and so on and which can yield a neutralized viscous fluid that exhibits a small viscosity increase relative to the viscosity of a neutralized viscous fluid obtained using a carboxyl-containing polymer not containing a polyhydric alcohol (iso)stearate and that has high transparency. The carboxyl-containing polymer composition can be obtained by polymerizing a monomer comprising an a,ß-unsaturated carboxylic acid as the main component in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol (iso)stearate. The polyhydric alcohol constituting the polyhydric alcohol (iso)stearate is a polyhydric alcohol selected from a specific group, and the polyhydric alcohol (iso)stearate is used in the polymerization in an amount of 0.2 to 7 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of the a,ß-unsaturated carboxylic acid.
