The device (1) has a switch head (12) and an actuator (8) e.g. mechanically coded actuator, brought into interaction with each other. A release signal is outputted at an output in an operation mode during interaction of the switch head and the actuator. The device is transferred into another operation mode by a locking insert (16), which is electrically contactlessly brought into active connection with the device as a virtual locking insert. The release signal is not outputted at the output in the latter operation mode during interaction of the switch head and the actuator. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a device for monitoring a state of a protective device of a machine.
