Disclosed are a component-mounting device and component-detection method that make it possible to detect, with high precision, the presence or absence of a component on a suction nozzle (11) of a mounting head (10) even when working with an elongated substrate (3). Per component mounting cycle, in which the mounting head (10) moves back and forth between a component-supply unit (4) and a substrate-transport mechanism (2) on the basis of mounting-program data (21a), a movement-path computation unit (25) derives the movement path of the mounting head (10). A focus processing unit (24) controls an optical-system focusing mechanism (18) on the basis of the derived movement-path data so as to focus a line sensor camera (14) on the movement path of the mounting head (10) when taking a picture and uses an optical-system zoom mechanism (17) to adjust the imaging scope to match the focus position.
