The method involves representing a graphical object e.g. data object such as contact data and multimedia data, in a display area (A), where the graphical object is assigned to an application. The graphical object is displaced from the display area into another display area (B1) by an operating device, where the operating device comprises a touch-sensitive surface (4). The graphical object is stored independently of the application. Vehicle data is transmitted to a control device (3) via a data bus (5). The display device comprises an LCD device. An independent claim is also included for a device for providing a user interface to a vehicle.
