The present invention relates to a negative electrode active material for a rechargeable lithium battery, a method of manufacturing the same, and a rechargeable lithium battery including the same. The negative active material has a specific surface area of 2 m 2 /g or more and less than 5 m 2 /g and includes secondary particles composed of assembled primary particles of a compound represented by Chemical Formula 1:
