<p>Optically active methylsuccinic diesters represented by the following general formula (I): R1OOCCH2C* H(CH3)COOR2, wherein R1 is C¿1-6? alkyl; R?2¿ is C¿1-6? alkyl different from R?1¿; and the asterisked carbon atom is an asymmetric carbon atom; and a process for producing optically active methylsuccinic diesters represented by the formula (I) and optically active methylsuccinic monoesters as the enantiomer thereof and represented by the following general formula (III): R1OOCCH2C* H(CH3)COOH, wherein R1 is as defined above and the asterisked carbon atom is an asymmetric carbon atom, characterized by asymmetrically hydrolyzing a racemic methylsuccinic diester represented by the following general formula (II): R1OOCCH2CH(CH3)COOR2, (wherein R?1 and R2¿ are each as defined above) in the presence of either a culture of a microorganism having the ability to asymmetrically hydrolyze esters or an optionally treated microorganism.</p> |
