An input device 10 for the input of a personal identifier (such as a code, combination, password, PIN), the input device comprising an input user interface, a visual output interface 7 and a shuffle processor, where the shuffle processor can switch between different input positions for the available input values. This leads to various configurations of input keys 1, since the configurations can be scrambled (randomised, rearranged or reordered). The input keys can be provided on a touch screen, or input can be provided by moveable elements. There can be a reset button or key 2 that re-shuffles the input values. The input values might be shown for only a limited period of time, for example five seconds. The input values might be arranged in an array or grid, and include any one of a plurality of background colours which can be programmed to flash. This invention helps prevent personal identifiers being retrieved by unauthorised persons by looking.
