Switch system and method for operating a gas discharge lamp

The arrangement has a switch connected parallel to a gas discharge lamp, and an inductor serially connected to the switch. An igniter e.g. switchable superimposed-pulse igniter, is controlled by a control device i.e. microcontroller, and utilizes a capacitor as a takeover capacitor in an upstream direct current (DC) supply unit. A detection unit detects zero-crossing voltage, and is connected with a comparator input and an input/output (I/O) output of the control unit. A reference part is attached to a negative input of a differential analog-to-digital (A/D) converter at the control unit.
