FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: sulfuric acid is prepared by contact method. SO<SB>2</SB>-containing gas is dried and SO<SB>2</SB> is oxidized in contact apparatus under non-stationary conditions. Direction of gas stream admitted into catalyst bed is varied alternately. SO<SB>3</SB> is absorbed by sulfuric acid and final product is recovered. Gas containing 0.5-1.2 g/cubic m of sulfuric acid vapors is used for absorption purposes.
