Preparing supported catalysts comprises: providing many shaped catalyst supports; providing an impregnating solution containing at least one of catalytically active component or its precursor, and substances that increase the catalytic activity of the catalytically active component; and spraying the impregnating solution onto the catalyst support. The shaped catalyst support is present as a bed in a cylindrical drum that has a horizontal longitudinal axis, which has an inclination to the horizontal of at most 45[deg] . The cylindrical drum has gas passage openings and performs a rotational movement about the longitudinal axis and that guides a gas stream through the gas passage openings in the drum interior and flows through the bed of the shaped catalyst support.
