A plant DNA sequence (I) is new. ACTTTTCGAG CCCCTTGAAC TGGAAATTAA TACATTTTCC ACTTGACTTT TGAAAAGGAG GCAATCCCAC GGGAGGGAAG CTGCTACCAA CCTTCGTAAT GTTAATGAAA TCAAAGTCAC TCAATGTCCG AATTTCAAAC CTCANCAACC CAATAGCCAA T (I) Also claimed are: (1) the grapevine stilbene synthase Vst1 gene promoter region lacking at least the DNA sequence (I); (2) a chimeric molecule into which at least a fragment of (I) has been inserted; (3) vectors containing (I), the above promoter region or chimeric nucleic acid molecule or portions thereof; (4) transgenic plants containing (I), the above promoter region or chimeric nucleic acid molecule or a DNA sequence derived therefrom, and parts and propagules and progeny of such plants; (5) transgenic plant cells, including protoplasts, containing (I), the above promoter region or chimeric nucleic acid molecule or a DNA sequence derived therefrom; and (6) transgenic plants or plant cells, including protoplasts, which no longer exhibit ozone-inducible expression of a naturally ozone-inducible gene because of the lack of at least part of (I).
