A smoking article which employs tobacco as a source of smoke and flavor, but which does not burn the tobacco; the smoking article including a tobacco tablet, a heat conductor in contact with the tablet and a source of heat which heats the conductor in contact with the tablet to a pre-selected temperature for generating smoke.
